The civilians who had not fled Shaddadi greeted the SDF troops with relief and recounted the horror of their lives under the Islamists' reign of terror. The bodies of terrorists littered the ground, but so did those of civilians killed by air strikes. Village by village, the SDF Coalition made up of Kurdish, Arab, Armenian, Assyrian, Chechen, Turkmen and Circassian fighters is determined to expand the territories it controls. A key ally of the West, its aim now is to influence Syria’s destiny. FRANCE 24 reporters Romeo Langlois, Mayssa Awad and Mohammed Hassan were able to gain exclusive access to the fighters of this interethnic coalition that is taking on the IS group "caliphate". They witnessed firsthand the battle to take back the town of Shaddadi. This is their extraordinary 35-minute documentary.   ►► Also watch our video report: "Inside Assad’s Syria" Visit our website : http://www.france24.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel : http://f24.my/youtubeEN Like us on Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/FRANCE24.English Follow us on Twitter : https://twitter.com/France24_en

UPDATE: The UK government seized Zaina Erhaim's passport as she came to Britain to speak at a literary festival. They say it was at the request of the Syrian government, who claimed her passport was stolen. Returning to Syria after working for the BBC in London, Zaina Erhaim found that all of the citizen journalists reporting on the civil war were men. When she decided to run training sessions for women who wanted to be journalists, she quickly realised the obstacles they faced were enormous. After warning his commanders that the war against ISIS had become one of sniper fire, Lieutenant Colonel Firaz, deputy commander of Brigade 36, was killed by an ISIS sniper. “It’s all become sniper fire, which is killing us,” one soldier said. Dodging the sniper fire, Iraqi forces slowly inspect houses as they move forward. They found a weapons factory next door to a mosque and two doors down from peoples’ homes. The forces are trying to open a safe route for civilians fleeing the fighting and ISIS control. One young boy was wounded in a mortar attack three months ago. He still has shrapnel in his back.

Anthony Loyd, a reporter who was badly beaten while being briefly held by a rebel group in Syria has told BBC HARDtalk that he would go back to the country "in principle". More than 60 journalists have been killed in Syria's civil war. Across the world journalists have become targets as never before, murdered, kidnapped and, in the case of three Al Jazeera journalists in Egypt, locked up by the state for doing their jobs. HARDtalk speaks to Anthony Loyd, the award-winning war correspondent of The Times newspaper, who was shot and seriously injured in Syria in May 2014. Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced their intention to reestablish the caliphate and declared their leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph. Flush with cash and US weapons seized during recent advances in Iraq, the Islamic State’s expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged. Elsewhere in territory it has held for some time, the Islamic State has gone about consolidating power and setting up a government dictated by Sharia law. While the world may not recognize the Islamic State, in the Syrian city of Raqqa, the group is already in the process of building a functioning regime. VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings. In part one, Dairieh heads to the frontline in Raqqa, where Islamic State fighters are laying siege to the Syrian Army’s division 17 base. Get your free audio book: http://blon.us/f/b01j8i5wt8 Journalism is a dangerous business when ones "beat" is a war zone. Armoudian reveals the complications facing frontline journalists who cover warzones, hot spots and other hazardous situations. It compares yesterdays conflict journalism, which was fraught with its own dangers, with todays even more perilous situationsin the face of shrinking journalism budgets, greater reliance on freelancers, tracking technologies, and increasingly hostile adversaries. It also contrasts the difficulties of foreign correspondents who navigate alien sources, languages and land, with domestically-situated correspondents who witness their own homelands being torn apart.
