He has managed bureaus in the US and overseas, and set up two bureaus in war zones. He speaks six languages, has won four Emmys and an Edward R. Murrow award. His first forays into television came in Iraq, where he was part of the ABC News/TIME team that reported the special series “Iraq, Where Things Stand”, which won two Emmy Awards in 2003 and 2004. He covered the execution of Saddam Hussein, the battle for Baghdad and the U.S. troop surge under General Petraeus. He travelled throughout Iraq covering the war from the U.S. military and the Iraqi civilian perspectives, for which he won an Emmy Award in 2007. McCarthy also reported on Islamic radicals in Jordan, life along the Yangtze River in China, the North Korean nuclear threat, swine flu in Mexico and hurricanes in the Caribbean. After completing his studies in Philosophy at University College Dublin, Terence moved to Paris to further pursue his studies before returning to Ireland to begin his reporting career working for the Irish Press in Dublin in 1984. He left Ireland to cover the civil wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua and the earthquake in Mexico City in 1985. After warning his commanders that the war against ISIS had become one of sniper fire, Lieutenant Colonel Firaz, deputy commander of Brigade 36, was killed by an ISIS sniper. “It’s all become sniper fire, which is killing us,” one soldier said. Dodging the sniper fire, Iraqi forces slowly inspect houses as they move forward. They found a weapons factory next door to a mosque and two doors down from peoples’ homes. The forces are trying to open a safe route for civilians fleeing the fighting and ISIS control. One young boy was wounded in a mortar attack three months ago. He still has shrapnel in his back.

Fault Lines - On the Front Lines with the Taliban In this episode of Fault Lines, we gain unprecedented access to report from the Taliban stronghold of Charkh District, just an hour outside the Afghan capital, Kabul. Reporter Nagieb Khaja follows Taliban fighters as they launch an attack on an Afghan National Army (ANA) base, and investigates what the ANA are up against as foreign troops continue to withdraw. Khaja follows a dawn raid as the Taliban pound the ANA base with rockets and machine guns, and he witnesses suicide attackers attempt to enter through the main gates. ISAF planes circle overhead, and Khaja is concerned that they will engage. He watches the Taliban deal with losing men and interviews a local Talib about what he does when he is not engaged in warfare. Fault Lines also interviews Jack Keane, a retired US four-star general, and Kurt Volker, the former US ambassador to NATO (2008 to 2009), to get their analysis on the battle and what the future holds for Afghanistan. On the Front Lines with the Taliban gives a rare look into the internal workings of the Taliban and illustrates some of the issues facing the Afghan National Army as the US withdraws its troops in 2014. Subscribe to France 24 now : http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN FRANCE 24 brings you a rare documentary filmed inside Syria. Our reporters gained exclusive access to the Syrian Democratic Forces, a coalition of Kurdish and Arab militias, as they continue to battle to recapture cities and territories from the Islamic State group. For two years the strategic town of Shaddadi, in northeastern Syria, was a stronghold of the Islamic State (IS) group jihadists. In February, 5,000 fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a coalition of Kurdish and Arab militias, encircled the city and battled the terrorists for 10 days. It took fierce fighting, supported by air strikes from the US-led coalition, and was slow progress until finally the SDF retook Shaddadi on February 19, liberating its residents from the yoke of the jihadists. The civilians who had not fled Shaddadi greeted the SDF troops with relief and recounted the horror of their lives under the Islamists' reign of terror. The bodies of terrorists littered the ground, but so did those of civilians killed by air strikes. Village by village, the SDF Coalition made up of Kurdish, Arab, Armenian, Assyrian, Chechen, Turkmen and Circassian fighters is determined to expand the territories it controls. A key ally of the West, its aim now is to influence Syria’s destiny. FRANCE 24 reporters Romeo Langlois, Mayssa Awad and Mohammed Hassan were able to gain exclusive access to the fighters of this interethnic coalition that is taking on the IS group "caliphate". They witnessed firsthand the battle to take back the town of Shaddadi. This is their extraordinary 35-minute documentary.   ►► Also watch our video report: "Inside Assad’s Syria" Visit our website : http://www.france24.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel : http://f24.my/youtubeEN Like us on Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/FRANCE24.English Follow us on Twitter : https://twitter.com/France24_en
